Memorable Manitobans: Julia Stella “Julie” Rich [Rychlik] (1920-1983)

Educator.

Born at Lwow, Poland [now Lviv, Ukraine] on 10 September 1920, daughter of Janina K. “Jean” Rychlik (1908-1993, later remarried to Stanley Brzezicki [Brzezicka]), and Wilfred Rychlik (c1897-1954), she immigrated with her family around 1928 and was grew up and educated in the North End of Winnipeg, adopting the Anglicized surname spelling of Rich in the 1940s and occasionally going by the nickname of Julie.

She attended teacher training and embarked on a careeer in education which spanned around 37 years. She taught at Prairie School / Marquette School (1943-1944) and was Principal of St. Charles School (1945-1946), after which she joined the Winnipeg School District and taught at Aberdeen School (1946-1950), Ralph Brown School (1950-1951), Lord Nelson School (1951-1952), King Edward School (1952-1953), and Robertson School (1953-1954). She went on to teach at Donald School (1956-1959), after which she spent the balance of her career in the Transcona-Springfield School Division prior to early retirement on account of poor health.

She died at the Health Sciences Centre on 3 October 1983 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
